A PLACE FOR EVERYONE
Warning: What you’re about to read might defy stereotypes about the Midwest. Champaign-Urbana is a melting pot, and yes, it is in the middle of Illinois. We have the highest number of international students of all public universities in the U.S., with students who come from more than 115 countries. You’ll find an abundance of international markets, ethnic restaurants, cultural centers, diverse houses of worship and foreign language media outlets here in Champaign-Urbana.
Champaign-Urbana is an open and welcoming community, with a lively LGBT community, dozens of resources and an annual Pride Festival that draws thousands of participants.
We are also known as pioneers of empowerment for the disabled community. More than 1,300 students with disabilities attend the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign annually. At the London 2012 Paralympic Games, athletes from the University of Illinois accounted for 10 of the 28 total U.S. track and field medals won. In 2014, Urbana was designated as an official U.S. Paralympic Training Site.
So, no matter who you are or where you come from, you’ll feel welcome in Champaign-Urbana.
